 It is easy to get carried away when thinking
about the future of urban air mobility (UAM), and whilst much of
the technology required already exists, there are still plenty of
hurdles – mainly logistics and statutory – to overcome.

In certain parts of the world drones are already
being used to transport cargo and it does not require much
imagination to believe that in the not too distant future flying
taxis could well become a realistic option. From there, perhaps one day some
of us, our children or grand children, may even have an eVTOL in the driveway.

At the recent APG World Connect airline conference
in Monaco, France the subject of electric vertical take-off and
landing (eVTOL) aircraft, UAM and air traffic management (ATM) was
discussed.

During the very interesting session, Yannick Assouad PhD, Executive Vice President,
Avionics at Thales, said that for the sector to achieve the goal
of 1.5 Euros per kilometre per passenger, eVTOLs will have to be
pilotless and that air traffic control (ATC) will have to be
completely automated and voiceless.

To learn more about the role Thales is playing in
the development of UAM and to discuss the topic in more detail,
Steven Howard of Travel News Asia sat down with Yannick Assouad to
ask those questions and more.
