As someone who is perpetually on the go—both as a travel writer and a new mom of twins—I’m always on the hunt for timeless wardrobe staples that combine comfort, style, and versatility. Enter the Spanx AirEssentials half zip and AirEssentials wide-leg pant: two oh-so-cozy loungewear essentials that can be worn separately or as a matching set.
I know what you’re thinking…Spanx? Loungewear? Yes, really. While the brand was initially known for its shapewear and undergarments, it has since expanded to offer a wide range of clothing—from denim and slacks to dresses, jumpsuits, and tennis skirts suitable for any occasion, be it the gym, the office, a long-haul flight, or, in my case, frequent trips to the pediatrician. I like to think of the AirEssentials set as a more elevated take on pajamas—though unlike the latter, these are acceptable to wear outside of my apartment. Best of all, you can (barely) tell I had less than five minutes to get dressed.
The half-zip sweatshirt stands out for its ultra-warm and seemingly weightless construction, which will keep you comfortably warm (read: not sweltering) for hours on end; as such, it’s an especially great pick for chilly plane rides. Plus, it’s ideal for layering courtesy of its oversized fit, which is why I often wear mine with a tank top underneath. Another bonus: It comes in 12 color options, from violet and black to navy and red.
The sweatshirt pairs just as perfectly with the matching pants as it does with a pair of my go-to leggings and joggers. But when I want a more uniform look, I wear the wide-leg pant, a favorite for its on-trend, loose-fitting silhouette and buttery soft construction. Since I’m fairly short (5’4″), I often have trouble finding a pair of wide-leg pants that are the right length (they never look quite as nice once hemmed). However, I found the cropped version to be my ideal length. The adjustable drawcord waist offers a customized fit, and unlike other pants I own, it doesn’t get twisted after washing.
I like to wear these pants with sneakers for a sportier look and platform Ugg slippers for a cozy-chic aesthetic. While the cropped version comes in just two shades—black and cream—the standard variety comes in 12 hues, three of which have shimmer for a slightly more formal feel for work or even a night out with friends.
It’s worth noting that both items are part of Spanx’s AirEssentials collection, which is well known for its ultra-soft, buttery fabric that’s designed to feel silky-smooth against the skin. Additionally, the drapey material features a four-way stretch to move with you as opposed to weighing you down, offering breathability along with optimal airflow and circulation to keep you comfortable in (pretty much) any condition or environment.
Initially, I was nervous that the clothes would become less soft after washing; however, I’m happy to report they’ve held up well and are just as plush as they were upon taking them out of the box, even after six months of wear. According to Spanx’s website, the garments should be washed inside-out in cold water on a gentle cycle before tumble drying on low heat; if I’m honest, I’m often too busy with the babies to follow these specific care instructions, and I haven’t had any issues with shrinking or pilling. Also worth noting: I’m covered in spit-up more often than not these days, and so far, the stains come out easily in the wash without having to take the extra step of spot-treating.
Both the pants and the sweatshirt are available in sizes XS–3X, and they run ever-so-slightly large. That said, if you’re between sizes, I recommend sizing up.
